There is really nothing to say about the plot of the movie, and the screenwriter and director really have no breakthrough in the "spy war"; they also understate the expression of the patriotic feelings of underground activists - after all, it is a joint venture film, and Americans probably can't make up anything too much. The deep patriotic complex of other countries; the performance of love is even more unsatisfactory, the Japanese officer Tanaka played by Watanabe, the American agent Soames played by Cusack, and the Shanghai played by Zhou Ruifa (purely a supporting role). Underworld member Lan Ting, why does their love seem so petty?
Especially Watanabe's Tanaka, a Japanese military officer who seems to be domineering, even fell into it for a girlfriend who smoked marijuana (and was a spy next to him), saying something like "Women are always so easy to forget". Such nonsense, and in the end, he knelt down beside Junko who was about to die and cried so hard, and let Gong Li and Kusek go aboard! It looks like a man of temperament, but it is actually quite speechless. Brother Zhou has been a trickster all over the place. He has few appearances, and it is a typical Hong Kong drama. Although he has three wives and four concubines, he loves the woman he loves so much that he can sacrifice everything and tolerate all the faults of women, even if he betrayed him and cheated. He, he still couldn't extricate himself, and finally died in the arms of a woman, a big fool who is still thinking about women.
As for Cusack and Gong Li, I actually think this pair is quite a match. But no matter how hard the two of them worked, I just couldn't experience the spark that should be there. Even in that fierce rivalry scene before going to bed but failing, I think the problem is the emptiness of the script, not the strength of the actors. That's why I gave it four stars.
Those spy war films should have the "big truth" of righteousness, patriotism, and death It seems difficult to understand, and Shanghai under the disaster can't make people feel the tension and excitement that it should have, probably because of the American perspective.
The last time I saw a mid-to-bad review, I had a few questions, and I also thought about it:
1. Gong Li's name is Anna: In fact, there is nothing wrong. After all, Anna is the daughter of a high-ranking official in Shanghai, and there is nothing wrong with a foreign name; not to mention that just like Chow Yun Fat's Lanting has an English name Anthony, Anna may have another Chinese name.
2. Chow Yun-fat and Gong Li are speaking English: Just like the "How Steel Is Made" shot by CCTV, it is in Chinese. After all, Americans have their own language considerations; in addition, Anthony and Anna are talking in English. In the presence of Soames, it was out of courtesy; in one scene, Anthony specifically apologized to Soames for having a conversation with Anna in Chinese.
3. Why is Shanghai being deliberately old? It seems that it is only in places like ports and slums that are deliberately old. Scenes like casinos are all new and new.
