This is a documentary about indie game making.

The first 1/3 mainly talk about the beauty of independent games. Friends with like-minded interests, according to their own hobbies, pursue their inner feelings, create games that truly express themselves in a work environment of "enjoyment", and achieve great success and earn money. Into a million dollars, fame and fortune. Minecraft can be described as the pinnacle of this brilliance, and its acquisition by Microsoft for $2.5 billion probably inspired a large group of dreamers.

Afterwards, it begins to describe what the environment Edmund "enjoys" is like. The first is poverty. The authors of FEZ and Meat Boy are both deeply troubled by poverty. Phil is on government benefits, Tommy is too poor to be in a relationship, and even gives up socializing altogether. Huge financial pressure brings crazy work pressure, overtime, overwork, insomnia, Edmund "I'm worried we'll die halfway", Phil "If I can't finish I'll kill myself". Even after the completion, external comments and sales performance are gnawing at their spirits all the time.

In the end, of course, all the hard work came, and it was a big sale. However, after all, there are very few successful people, and a large number of games that have never entered the public eye at the end of the film may be the truth of independent games.

The whole documentary has an overemphasis on the meaning of "hardships come to fruition", and the authors are desperate, and it seems that the game will be a big sell if they spend all their savings to make a game. In addition to John, the other three authors are crazy out of reality. I'd rather see an amateur author making games in his spare time (or conversely, taking over some other work in addition to making games), or getting crowdfunding and making limited attempts with financial support, rather than working on a game I spent four years of my youth desperately, and then succeeded as a matter of course. The chicken soup tasted too strong, to be honest it was quite poisonous.

There are a lot of independent games mentioned in the film, which is actually the main reason for writing this review.
super meat boy (super meat boy) is a super difficult side-scrolling game, very similar to fc's mario, similar works should be the i wanna series with the limit of difficulty. There are also cat Rio series that work hard on traps, which are all works that make people want to smash the keyboard.

FEZ (Fez) is a work that expands the space, showing the situation of the three-dimensional world in two dimensions. The more famous similar work is Monument Valley, which is mainly characterized by impossible graphics.

braid expands the time so that the protagonist can go back to the past. I haven't found a similar game

that mentions limbo (hell frontier) in addition to the three protagonists. It is a typical small and fresh horizontal puzzle game with a similar style. There are a lot of works, such as Devil's Cave Adventure, Mechanical Lost City, Journey to the Wind, Angela's Song, and Braveheart are well-known independent games, either better than the plot, or better than the puzzle. But personally I prefer Trine (Trinity), the collection and level-breaking elements are very interesting.

Minecraft is famous, and it may have created the sandbox era. The 3D mosaic villain digs and digs, making it very addicting. Similar 2d game Terraria, Starbound. Don't starve who is more focused on survival. There are many players of this type of game, and the life span is long. I also came into contact with sandbox games for the first time from Terraria. I also

recommend a traditional rpg work, the story of the waste city, and the plot and puzzle solving are quite good; the combination of Zelda type Isaac It is another work by Edmund after Super Meat Boy. The plot setting is good, but the evaluation is inflated.

Indie Game: The Movie quotes

  • Edmund McMillen: My whole career has been me, trying to find new ways to communicate with people, because I desperately want to communicate with people, but I don't want the messy interaction of having to make friends and talk to people, because I probably don't like them.

  • Tommy Refenes: The things I've sacrificed are social. You kind of have to give up something to have something great.
