Three French pilots were shot down by the Germans during a mission, and Podio, Mike and Rosenthal were taken to a prisoner of war camp. Both Podio and the German warden, Rofenstein, were of noble origin and shared political opinions. The two became friends in prison. The trio then found out that their inmates were planning an escape, and they dug a way to escape. Mike and Rosenthal also joined the excavation. In the end, they escaped collectively, and the Germans pursued them with all their might. During the escape, Podio was knocked down by Rofenstein, and two French prisoners, Mike and Rosenthal, escaped to the house of a German peasant woman. With her help, the two went through various twists and turns. Escape to Switzerland.
The film is one of the earliest prison break films, rated as one of the greatest "prison break films" and an anti-war masterpiece by director Jean Renoir.
