Army life sucks. This movie shows you why.

I'm not really a big fan of dramas, or war movies, especially ones that portray soldiers fighting and the life in the army. I was in the army for a while, and I HATED it. So I guess that's why I like this movie - at least one of the reasons. This movie shows just how terrible army life is, and why not all soldiers are heroes. Some are terrible people; while others will do anything to get out of such a terrible life. The other reason is there is a bit of mystery here, as a father stops at nothing to try and solve the murder of his son, as well as a police woman tries to help the father while having to deal with the sexist prejudice of her police man coworkers. Even though the drama is a bit slow, it's still very interesting to watch the story unfold.
Personally, I don't really like dramas, or war movies, especially the kind that depict war and military life. I was a soldier for a while before, and I didn't like that experience, but that's probably one of the reasons I liked the movie. The film shows the bad life of the army and explains that not all soldiers are heroes, some of them are very bad, and some of them are trying to escape this bad life. Another reason is because there is a bit of suspense in this film, in which a father has been persistently inquiring about the truth of his son's murder. There was also a female police officer who tried to help the father, but in the process had to confront her male sexist colleagues. Although the plot in the film is a bit slow, it is still very interesting to see the story unfold slowly.

The process of finding the truth about death has been weakened, highlighting the distortion of human nature caused by war. The despair of the father is truly interpreted.

I love Paul Haggis! Worthy of being a screenwriter, he is the only person who can tell me about any subject from the beginning to the end in one breath. Some people make films to look down on all living beings and stand above them. But I always feel that he embeds himself in the depths of the earth and observes the subtlest human nature from a low perspective. Tommy Lee's acting is amazing. This is an overlooked movie. War makes you ignore everything but life, so what about after the war?

In the Valley of Elah quotes

  • Corporal Steve Penning: We seemed to always pull sentry duty together. Freezing our asses off. He tried to convince me of the craziest things.

Hank Deerfield: Try to get you to wear pantyhose?

Corporal Steve Penning: Did he tell you?

Hank Deerfield: No, I told *him*. Cuts the cold like nothing else.

Corporal Steve Penning: So he wasn't lying.

Hank Deerfield: You just don't want to get shot wearing a pair of those things. You'll never live it down.

  • Det. Emily Sanders: I will arrest every soldier whose blood alcohol is 1/1000 over the legal limit. How many men do you think that will be?

Lt. Kirklander: And how long till you're fired?

Det. Emily Sanders: Oh I'm gonna do it on my own time, and we have a pretty good union, so I'm gonna say four to five weeks.
