This film is the fifth film in the "The Conjuring" series and is a prequel film to the devil nun in "The Conjuring 2". The film sets the background of the story in a ruined monastery in Romania. The mysterious and solemn atmosphere unique to the religious place makes the creation of the horror atmosphere even more frightening.
The story joins the triangular team mode of the exorcist priest, the young nun and the strong peasant. As for religious exorcism, I naturally prefer it. The film's scary methods are more traditional, but with religious elements, it doubles the horror. The production team used many elements of religious places to set off the atmosphere. If you have a certain degree of religious meaning, you will find this film interesting. For example, in the opening paragraph, a nun committed suicide. Anyone with knowledge of Catholicism knows that suicide is a serious crime in Catholicism, and it will be punished in hell. A nun who takes monasticism as her responsibility will protect the world at the cost of committing this heinous crime. The meaning of sacrifice very strong. It's like a miser who has been chasing wealth all his life, suddenly running out of his family wealth is very shocking. For another example, the inverted cross and the headless Jesus are the iconic symbols of anti-Christian sects. They are not just ordinary horror elements, but have strong religious meanings. There are also multiple appearances of snakes, snakes are incarnations of demons in Catholicism, and so on.
The evaluation criteria for whether a horror film is qualified is: whether it is scary. Watching it at night, this movie really made me cry out in fright. The dress of the devil nun is also a classic. In addition, Taisha Farmiga, who plays a nun in this film, puts on a nun's clothes and adds a non-human expression. I find this kind of abstinence dress very attractive, and I can't help but take a few more glances while watching the film, which is a little distracting. (May God forgive me for this impure thought).
Of course, the action logic of the characters in this film is also flawed. When normal people encounter terrifying and supernatural events, they are all about to leave, but the characters inside run to the terrifying place repeatedly. The feeling was: there's no way, it's an hour-and-a-half movie, and if we run away, the movie won't go on.
