atypical nazi officer

Although some netizens found some logical errors in the film, in my opinion, this is still a very worth watching anti-war movie. The main line of the story is very simple. It tells the story of a Jew who survived in a concentration camp through his own Persian language, but the image of Koch, a Nazi officer, impressed me even more.

There are three scenes that stood out to me:

1. After a period of "Persian" study, Koch excitedly read his new poem to Reza.

"The wind blows the cloud to the east, to the place where the soul longs for peace, and I know there, I will be happy, in the distance where the cloud drifts."

The Nazi officers, in the concentration camps, read the peaceful poem in "Persian" created by the names of the slaughtered Jews, which is very meaningful.

2. Koch rescued Reza from dying, Koch said "I'm not a murderer", Reza said "But you let the executioners eat and drink"

If we move the Nazi concentration camps to the current workplace, it seems to be in harmony. If Koch takes off the Nazi uniform, he becomes a very inspirational workplace person, but in that environment, it becomes different. At the same time, joining the Nazis and participating in the war are not against Koch's own wishes. In his own words, he is a cook. His ideal is to open a restaurant in Tehran, and he is only involved in this. war.

This is a bit similar to Arendt's banal evil, he has lost the ability to think, or in this collective system, he can't make his own choices.

3. At the end, Koch escaped the war and was ready to run to his ideal life, but found that the Persian he learned was incomprehensible to others, and was arrested as a German.

In a sense, I still feel sorry for Koch, it seems that he should not be responsible for the war, whether the collective fault should be borne by each individual. This question may go on forever and never have an answer.

At the same time, the performance of the other protagonist Reza is also quite good. Although there are anti-war movies like "Schindler's List" where the peak is, but this is undoubtedly a very good movie and worth watching.

Persian Lessons quotes

  • Klaus Koch: [Koch took Gilles back after he was put to move to another camp] You would risk your life for those nameless people.

Gilles: Those aren't nameless. Just because you don't know their names. At least they aren't murderers.

Klaus Koch: I'm not a murderer.

Gilles: No. You just make sure that the murderers eat well.

  • Klaus Koch: As long as you work for me nothing will happen to you. I bet 20 cans of meat that nothing will happen to you.

Gilles: Too bad I won't be able to eat them since I'll be dead.
