The little boy Elliot has an older brother and a younger sister. The elder brother has his own friends, and he is not willing to play with him, and always laughs at him. The younger sister is still young and needs more care from her mother.
Little Elliot misses the days when Dad was still around. Dad would take him and his brother to the ball game and would believe everything he said. However, Dad went to faraway Mexico and will not come back.
Little Elliott was also out of place at school. The other children in the anatomy class covered the jar obediently, but little Elliot wanted to let the frog go free.
Lonely little Elliot finally has a playmate. ET made little Elliot prove in front of his brother that he was not a liar and "has absolute power" since then.
Little Elliot wanted to hide ET at home and kept it like that. He felt that he could take care of him and protect him. What a childish idea.
Soon, ET learned human language and expressed a desire to go home.
