Das Boot (from the bottom of the sea) 1981

After watching a few Japanese films, continue to watch the IMDB250 series. The film ranked 63rd and is a German film.

Before watching this movie, I thought it was a science fiction film based on Jules-Verne's novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", so I was full of hope before watching it, hoping to see a science fiction film in the 1980s . When I started watching, I realized that the content of the film was very different from what I expected. It turned out to be a film about the German Navy submarine force. This kind of story makes me a little disappointed. Such a movie must have a heavy theme, and it must not look easy. However, Germans tell the story of their own army during World War II, which is rare and should be seen.

The story of the film revolves around the lives of soldiers on a submarine. The task of the German submarine force was to sneak attack on the Allied cargo fleet, so the entire film depicts the entire combat process of this submarine in detail. The film can be roughly divided into two parts. The first part tells the story of the submarine sailing from the port, looking for a target, attacking the target, being discovered by the British Navy and dealing with it, and finally escaping the story. The second half tells the story of the submarine being resupplied in Spain after receiving a new mission. It suffered heavy damage while crossing the Strait of Gibraltar and sank to the bottom of the sea, but with the efforts of the entire crew, it resurfaced and returned to the base. At the end of the film, when the crew was welcomed by the people at the base, they were accidentally attacked by an air strike. Most of the crew were killed and injured, and even the tenacious submarine was sunk by the plane. The movie ends with such an ironic ending.

I've watched a lot of movies lately, so the plot of most of them doesn't appeal to me much anymore. In the process of watching the film now, I am always watching the progress of time, and I hope it will end sooner. But this film didn't give me that feeling. The whole film was about 150 minutes long. The film deeply captures the hearts of the audience through the intense plot. Although there is no particularly big scene, the thrilling moments set by the arrangement of the story and the use of the camera take up 90% of the time of the film. For example, when I was attacked by a destroyer for the first time, the sound of the booming depth charges made me also worry about the officers and soldiers of the submarine in the film; when I attacked the British cargo ship, I also sweated for them, for fear that they would attack them. miss the target. These scenes abound in the film. In a word, my heart and the soldiers in the submarine share the same fate.

The special environment of the submarine makes the scene scope of this film very narrow, but the unique lens used by the director makes us not feel cramped at all. A lot of fast-moving shots, like the rapid movement through the submarine, made us follow the soldiers into a tense fight. As a movie in the 1980s, the pictures of the hull flooding into the water and the soldiers' efforts to rescue are not inferior to "Titanic" filmed in 1997 at all, and they look better than "Titanic". More real and tense, this film can be seen as a submarine version of "Titanic". Moreover, "Titanic" must have borrowed many advantages from the film in order to use today's film history classics. In short, it is very remarkable that the director can make such a level of film in the 1980s when there were almost no special effects.

The ending of the story is sobering. The crew members who have escaped death many times in the sea could not survive an air attack by the British army; after hundreds of battles, they could withstand multiple depth charges, and submarines that could dive into a depth of 290 meters, but they could not withstand the bombs of the British Air Force! After the air raid, the captain fainted with sadness when he saw his beloved submarine sinking into the sea. What an irony that the crew did not die in the sea, but in their own base. Like the title of the movie, they can only "strike from the bottom of the sea"!

I'm not familiar with the cast of this film at all. They are neither Hollywood actors nor recent active stars, nor are I likely to be familiar with them. In that case, don't say it.

In addition, the version I see is the version suppressed by TLF in the early days, and it is the standard version. In the later stage, TLF suppressed the extended version and the director's cut version. According to my years of experience in watching movies, the extended version is often not good-looking. The extended version will stuff some unrelated plots into it and stretch it for a long time; the director The cut version is not much better, it will add the director's own ideas, and the audience will not like the very personal things. The public release version of the movie is often the best version. It has no redundant plot, making the film compact; it also has no redundant emotional expression, which is in line with the aesthetics of the general public. Therefore, these two versions of this film, if you have the opportunity and time in the future, let's watch it again.

Overall, it's a perfect movie: a tense plot, a pressing imagery, a use of fast shots, a relaxed story structure, and a tragic ending without any flaws. Such a movie is well-deserved to be selected for the IMDB250.

Contaminated with human self-confidence precision submarines, deep sea and indoor claustrophobia, you can get away with the force of nature, but you will always be planted in cruel humanity. What makes "From the Bottom of the Sea" truly outstanding as a war film is that its exploration of the meaning of war focuses on the most uninteresting times, places and people of war, the slow rhythm of the deep sea swallowing everything, and the death messages of dashboards and clocks, endless sluggish and panicked, ridiculous fluke

The closed scene creates a tense atmosphere and depicts the psychology of the characters well. The final realist ending is quite similar to The Price of Fear, where no one is ever safe on a doomed road of no return.
