A Cry in the Dark movie plot

The film is based on real facts. In 1980, young Australian couple Michael Chamberlain and Lindy took their three children on holiday in the tourist resort of Ayr Rock. In the evening, the couple took their two older children to a neighbor's house, while the sleeping baby girl Azaria stayed in the tent. Hearing a cry in the dark, a wild dog escaped from the tent, leaving only blood stains in the cradle. The introverted Lindy hides her grief, but unexpectedly raises suspicions about the couple. The media even hyped up the baby girl's name Azaria as a "wild offering", describing the couple as blasphemous heretics who deliberately used their own baby as a sacrifice to the gods. Lindy was interrogated for up to two years on charges of killing her own baby, and was sentenced to life in prison in the absence of physical evidence. Michael was treated as an accessory and sentenced to a year and a half in prison, suspended for caring for two children. Lindy, who was already pregnant, gave birth to another baby girl in prison, still being raised by Michael. Lindy did not give up on defending herself during this period. Later, something was discovered near Ayr Rock that proved Lindy was not the murderer. In September 1988, the charges against the couple were dropped and they were acquitted.

What is the truth? Do you believe what you see?

The truth of the facts may never be known, it is just the director's justice. Today it seems that the power of the media has been magnified by countless levels, and the public as a group cannot be rational. So everything becomes very meaningless... It seems that only individuals can experience existence or reality. As a film form is very general, the inexplicable tension before the tragedy is created very well.

A Cry in the Dark quotes

  • Michael Chamberlain: I don't think a lot of people realise how important innocence is to innocent people.

  • Lindy Chamberlain: I'm told, "Don't talk like you normally talk. Watch how you hold your mouth. You look too sour and crabby. Don't get angry. Don't ask too many questions, or they think you're trying to be smart. And never, never, never laugh or you're an uncaring bitch." Well, I can't cry to order, and I won't be squashed into some dumb act for the public... or for you.
