The film is based on the 1988 Joseph "Joe" Pulitzer award-winning novel by Tony Morrison. Written in an experimental stream of consciousness , the original reflects the painful imprint of slavery on people's souls. The film's producer - Oprah Winfrey, who also plays Sethe - spent ten years bringing the story to the screen with the same emphasis on the original. The film was rated R due to the amount of gore, sexual violence, and scenes reflecting Sethe's harrowing recollections. The woman named "Beloved" actually acts as a soul.
