In the film, the director inserted charming scenery such as beautiful autumn leaves, beautiful fishing port and soaring seagulls, making the film very vivid and full of romance. On the surface, people feel that this is just a simple love film. However, the film expresses profound themes in a light-hearted form, reflecting the complex issues facing the deaf community through the love entanglement of Liz and Sarah. Everything in the movie is just like the name of the movie, satirizing the prejudice that deaf people suffer from the world of hearing. They are pitied and regarded as inferior, simply because of their inborn loss of hearing ability. The communication activities of the entire film "Children of a Lesser God" are dominated by audio language, which is obviously unfair and discriminatory. But the film objectively lets the world know more about the deaf group, and helps the mutual understanding between the deaf and the hearing person. In addition to promoting the spread of deaf culture in the United States, the film also promoted the development of American Sign Language. It fully demonstrated American Sign Language to the American public and made sign language recognized by people. The film shows that American Sign Language, like other natural languages, is a language with its own characteristics. Sign language is a major feature of the film, and the protagonists Sarah and Liz communicate through sign language from beginning to end. Therefore, it can be said that this is a love story told in sign language
