Downfall Media evaluation

"The Destruction of Empire" shows the revelation of the truth in a convincing way. It is not a simplistic irony, but it retains the complex nature of the world to the maximum. This simplistic irony is mixed with a blind sense of moral superiority, making Hitler farther and farther away from the true face of history, and turned into an evil symbol that allows future generations to be smeared—anything done to Hitler contradicts this sense of morality. The interpretation of this will cause huge controversy and inexplicable anxiety. For Oliver Sisberg, all this seems very absurd.
Sisberg did not simply regard Hitler as a messenger sent by Satan to the world. He looked back on this darkest chapter in German history with a stronger sense of mission and responsibility, and in a more sincere way, and proposed to history. A powerful question: Why would a loving father become an evil murderer and the people become barbaric? Why is the whole country looking at the world in such an absurd light? Sisberg did not evade the pain caused by these problems. His insight into historical facts and the courage to resist the nihilism of history made him take a powerful step to shoot this film in a documentary way, almost objectively. ()
This is one of the best films so far reflecting on the crimes of the Nazis. The reason is that the film reduced Hitler to an ordinary person, instead of letting the so-called "devil" act as a scapegoat for human conscience. ()
No matter how cruel Hitler is, we still cannot deny his existence as a person. The Hitler we see in the film has a gentle side, but also a hysterical side, old and desperate, especially when he is on the verge of extinction, there will inevitably be humanity revealed. ()
"The Destruction of the Empire" shows that Germany has become increasingly mature in its attitude towards the history of World War II. Have more confidence in the artistic and cultural expression of that period of history. Critics generally believe that Germans can review their past through art forms. This film captures the painful introspection of Germans, without falsification or concealment. ()

Exquisite, close, calm, fluent, rhythm controlled, from a technical point of view, the level of typical German manufacturing is too good.

    Quite objective and lengthy

Downfall quotes

  • Martin Bormann: [reading folder in hand] My Führer, following your decision to stay in Berlin, do I have your approval as Vice Chancellor to immediately take charge of the entire Reich with the necessary power and authority? If I receive no answer by 10 p.m., I will assume that you have been incapacitated. I will serve the well-being of our people and fatherland.

[closes folder and puts it down]

Martin Bormann: He's betraying Germany... and you!

Walter Hewel: Göring's concern isn't unjustified. If our communication system breaks down, which could happen at any time, we'd be cut off from the world; we could no longer pass on orders.

Joseph Goebbels: I see it differently. Göring wants to seize power. I never trusted that mob he gathered at Obersalzberg; it stinks of a coup.

Adolf Hitler: That failure. That sponger... A parvenu! A lazybones!

[Albert Speer returns while Hitler rants offscreen]

Adolf Hitler: How dare he declare me unable to act? Tomorrow he might declare me dead!

    Albert Speer: Hello, Frau Junge.

Traudl Junge: Herr Speer. How did you get into Berlin?

Albert Speer: It wasn't easy, but I must speak with the Führer.

Heinz Linge, Kammerdiener: I'd wait here if I were you.

Adolf Hitler: The Luftwaffe... What did he do with it? That was reason enough to execute him! That morphine addict... helped to corrupt this country! And now this...

    [Hewel looks down in disappointment]

Adolf Hitler: He betrayed me of all people! Me of all people!

    [pause]

Adolf Hitler: I want Göring to be deprived of power and removed from office. If I don't survive the war, that man is to be executed at once.

  • General der Infanterie Hans Krebs: The enemy has broken through along a wide front. They've taken Zossen to the south, and are advancing to Stahnsdorf. They're now on the northern outskirts between Frohnau and Pankow. They've reached Lichtenberg, Mahlsdorf and Karlshorst to the east.

Adolf Hitler: Steiner's assault will bring it under control.

General der Infanterie Hans Krebs: My fuhrer, Steiner...

Generaloberst Alfred Jodl: Steiner couldn't mobilize enough men. He was unable to carry out the assault.

Adolf Hitler: [Removes glasses] These men will stay here: Kietel, Jodl, Krebs and Burgdorf.
