A retired worker from Sicily who lost his wife for many years went to a big Italian city to visit four children living in different cities. This trip described the Italian social customs and family affection at that time.
The protagonist Sculo visits without the knowledge of the four children in order to be together. But the trip left him with mixed feelings: none of the four children he had high hopes for came to fruition, and, sadly, one of them died unexpectedly not long ago. The children tried to comfort their father with lies, big and small, while the father told his wife's grave that "everyone is fine".
