Hunger movie plot

The leader of the Northern Irish Republican Army, Bobby Sands, was arrested for leading a demonstration against the authorities. In Metz prison, he still did not give up the struggle. The prison is full of six square meters of closed cells, where prisoners of the Northern Irish Republican Army are held. They are naked and refused to wear prison clothes, in order to fight against Margaret Hilda Thatcher's decree depriving prisoners of their rights. They used dirty food and excrement to cover the ditch under the deformed door to convey the message. Through a smug radio, the prisoners were able to keep abreast of the news of the Republican Army's struggle with the British government. In the end, when Sands decided to fight on a hunger strike, he had a wonderful debate with Father Dominic Moran, but the result was not helpful.

In a film of only 90 minutes, the director actually used nearly 30 minutes to shoot a set of confrontation scenes in a single scene, and there was almost no switching of the soundtrack and shots. Steve McQueen could really dare to play.

The essence lies in the lens art and performance, especially the large number of gorgeous or simple long shots and the super-long dialogue scene.

Hunger quotes

  • Bobby Sands: I always felt that thief next to Jesus got off lightly.

Father Dominic Moran: Ah, but he recognized his sins.

    Bobby Sands: Did he though?

Father Dominic Moran: Aye. Said as much.

Bobby Sands: When you're hung from a cross you're gonna say anything. Jesus offers him a seat next to his daddy in a place called paradise you're always gonna put your hand up and have a piece of that.

Father Dominic Moran: Aye. Even when it's nailed to your cross.

  • Father Dominic Moran: [offering Sands a cigarette] Bit of a break from smokin' the Bible, eh?

    Bobby Sands: [agrees]

Father Dominic Moran: Anyone work out which book is the best smoke?

Bobby Sands: We only smoke the Lamentations. A right miserable cigarette.
