Before filming the film, director Nolan watched a documentary about the American desert famine and disaster produced by Ken Burns. He said that the images presented in this 6-hour documentary are even more imaginative than sci-fi movies. The director team put some of these elements directly into the structure of "Interstellar", such as the interviews with survivors in the opening of "Interstellar", which borrowed the form and feeling from the documentary.
In the film, Matthew McConaughey walked into the house from the car with his daughter in the film. Flying sand and rocks made them unable to open their eyes, and behind them were a few oversized blowers and a bunch of staff working hard to blow up the sand. Director Nolan didn’t like special effects. The special effects couldn’t achieve the feeling of sand and immersion he wanted. Therefore, at his request, special effects actor Scott Fisher found C-90-a non-toxic, The biodegradable material made of shredded cardboard is safe enough to be used as a filler for some processed foods, and light enough to achieve the hovering effect Nolan wanted.
