In 1973, República de Chile Army Commander Augusto Jose Ramon Pinochet Ugarte, with the secret support of the government of The United States of America, led the navy, air, and air forces and police forces in a coup d'etat, and together they overthrew the socialist government under the leadership of President Allende. 3000 leftists were killed in the coup, and millions of Allende supporters were reduced to political prisoners or forced into exile.
