"Monos" focuses on the eight "Monos" juvenile guerrillas and an American female captive in the mountains of Colombia. The film subtly shows the romantic disputes, the test of loyalty and the life-threatening power struggle in this micro-society. The sensory impact of the whole movie is like a knife piercing through the flesh of the audience's mind, because its artistry transcends the boundaries of the screen. Photographer Gaspel Wolfe uses his exquisite lens language to show the sensory hallucinations in the crazy night and the untamed scenery of the Columbia Mountains. These images add ethereal splendor to the film. Michael Levy’s soundtrack for the film seems to sway between the world and the gods, whether it is the whistle echoing in the mountains, or the intermittent turbine-like sound, and occasionally accompanied by opera strings.
