Lois is the daughter of the French countess. After her sister died, she was taken home from the monastery. Lois was told indifferently to marry a Milanese man he had never met. This is a mutually beneficial marriage because the suitors will provide a lot of the funds they need. To commemorate this wedding, the countess invited an artist Mary to paint a portrait of her daughter. Mary was by Lois's side because her mother suspected that she would be reluctant when painting portraits. Mary observes Lois during the day and then paints at night.
