Schindler's List Shooting process

The film was shot in Krakow, Poland on March 1, 1993, and it lasted 71 days. The scenes in the film were shot in real locations, only the Prasov concentration camp was rebuilt near the original site.
Spielberg did not use the plot board, but adopted the method of documentary filming, and drew inspiration from "Twisted Cross" in 1956 and "Havoc" in 1985. Forty percent of the film was shot with a handheld camera. Spielberg gave up the use of booms, camera stabilizers, zoom lenses, and any equipment that can create a sense of security.
Photographer Januzzi Kaminsky hopes that the picture of the film will show a sense of timelessness, but the crew who has always been shooting color films have difficulty adapting to black and white films. Art director Alan Starski must make adjustments accordingly. In order to avoid confusion between the characters and the background, Stussky had to make the background light and shade different from the characters, and the color of the clothing should be completely different from the skin color and the color of the scenery.

Jeremiah's lamentations echoed in his head. Every shot tears me apart.

Schindler's List quotes

  • Itzhak Stern: The standard SS rate for skilled Jewish workers is seven marks a day, five for unskilled and women. This is what you pay to the Reich Economic Office. The Jews themselves receive nothing. Poles you pay wages. Generally, they get a little more. Are you listening?

Oskar Schindler: What was that about the SS? The rate? The what?

Itzhak Stern: The Jewish worker's salary - you pay it directly to the SS, not to the worker. He gets nothing.

Oskar Schindler: But it's less. It's less than what I would pay to a Pole.

    Itzhak Stern: It's less.

Oskar Schindler: That's the point I'm trying to make. Poles cost more. Why should I hire Poles?

  • Amon Goeth: [addressing prisoners] Nobody knows who stole the chicken, hmm?

S.S. Guard: Tell him about the chicken!

Amon Goeth: A man walks around with a chicken and nobody notices this...

S.S. Guard: Save yourselves, save yourself. Tell him about the chicken!
