Three young steel workers from Pennsylvania, Michael, Stevenand Nick, came to Vietnam during the Vietnam War. When leaving the United States, Steven married Angela who was pregnant, and their wedding was also a farewell party for the three young people. After the wedding, the three went hunting together. Michael shot a stag with a magical shot, but he still looked depressed, because in his heart it was tantamount to betting on life. On the battlefield, all three of them became prisoners of Vietnamese soldiers. The Vietnamese soldiers forced them to play Russian roulette with revolvers. Nick was scared to death, but Michael was very calm. He also took the opportunity to snatch the Vietnamese soldiers. With his gun, he escaped from the prison camp with his companions, but they were separated again after escaping. Michael and Steven returned to the United States. Steven was disabled for life and stayed in a nursing home unwilling to go home. Although Michael was intact, but mentally no longer, he lived with Nick’s girlfriend Linda. When Michael learned that Nick was still alive and living in Saigon, he came to Vietnam and found Nick, but at this time Nick was indifferent. Nick played Russian roulette in front of Michael. This time he died by drinking a bomb.

The most overlooked part of the Vietnam War tetralogy is obviously inferior to "Apocalypse Now" and "Full Metal Shell" in terms of reflecting on the war, but the film takes another shortcut, focusing on several Russian descendants before and during the war. The post-war mental state, portrayed calmly and objectively, is still commendable.

I didn’t feel it the first time I saw it about ten years ago, but the remaining impression is like a choking on the bones. I re-watched it today and it was very shocking. The Master Shot that emphasized order was cancelled, Zsigmond's photography washed away all illusions, and finally there was a Joyce-like ending with a missing corner and an unbalanced dining table. Compared with its original and noisy, "Apocalypse Now" appears to be overly elaborate.

The Deer Hunter quotes

  • Stan: How does it feel to be shot?

Michael: Don't hurt. That's what you wanna know. And how it's been? Doing OK?

Stan: Yeah, same thing. Nothing's changed. I'm getting more ass than a toilet seat, and Axel here, he's getting fatter than ever.

  • Stan: There's sometimes I think that I swear you're a fucking faggot.
