The Grandmaster Taste and emotion

Throughout the Chinese film scene in 2013, "The Grandmaster" was an outstanding film. Wong Kar-wai is going through his old work with his iconic slowness. "The Grandmaster" is good-looking because it has a taste. It spans time and takes pictures of history. In the battles in the martial arts, the nostalgia and nostalgia for the past era are presented. His movies always like to talk about time, and "The Grandmaster" also has many scenes of taking photos of the characters. The small group photos are actually to freeze history, to establish a monument for an era and the people at that time. This is Wong Kar-wai's feelings. Because of this feeling, he can do all kinds of preliminary preparations for several years, and also make the film remarkable in all aspects of photography, editing, art, performance and so on. This kind of film sweeping the Golden Image Awards is a respect for the film itself.

I don't know if Wong Kar Wai's personal style can't control such a big narrative structure, or if such a story is not suitable for Wong Kar Wai's style. In short, the shooting is still very beautiful, but the narrative is completely loose, and the emotional expression of the King of Sunglasses is not enough.

This is "movie" compared to the stuff that was put in the movie theaters in 2012. Unfortunately, the current public version feels like a semi-finished product, and it seems that it takes at least 3 hours to finish what the director wants to say. If it is required according to the standard of "Gone Wulin" + "Republic of China", it is still half a star. (Look at the 3D version on January 8, 2015. This is almost a brand new version. Both have their own strengths, and the 3D version has a more typographical narrative.)

The Grandmaster quotes

  • Ma San: Gong Yutian spoke to me about his last move: Old Monkey Hangs Up His Badge. He said the secret of that move was to turn back. I didn't understand his meaning at the time, I thought he was unable to keep up with changing times...

  • Gong Er: I had considered a career in opera years ago, I had received training. I had thought about it a lot: me on stage performing, and you in the audience watching...

Ip Man: What if your performance had sold out?

Gong Er: [smiles] You flatter me. I would have reserved a seat specifically for you.
