In 1997, Liu Zhenwei and Wong Kar-wai prepared the script of "The Grandmaster", and finally stopped because of the film company's funding. Announced the title and starring in 2002. From December 12, 2009 to April 18, 2010, "The Grandmaster" was filmed in Chikan Film and Television City , Kaiping , Guangdong . In addition, it was also filmed in Shenyang, Changchun and other places.
There are 8 martial arts masters involved in "The Grandmaster". Among them, the shot at the Tieling Steam Engine Museum is a shot of the northern martial arts master. According to a crew member, Wong Kar-wai's film was still shot without a script. In order to pursue the perfect picture, the shooting speed was extremely slow. When entering the set every day, Wong Kar-wai only brought a piece of paper with more than 20 lines of words on the paper. At the end of the day, he would shoot at most two lines of words, and most of the time he was reshooting.
Wong Kar-wai prevented sneak shots. A cordon was placed about 50 meters away from the shooting scene. A staff member was arranged to patrol at 30 meters. Other film titles were written on the crew's vehicle. In addition, his filming time is not fixed, and he often likes to rest during the day and shoot after early morning. The crew also chose a stand-in for each starring actor, even if a reporter got into the scene, it might not be possible to see the actor's true face.

If the Chinese film industry must have a dance king who can only be himself no matter what role he plays, it must be Zhao Benshan. If one must be added, it must be Xiaoshenyang.

The Grandmaster quotes

  • Ma San: Gong Yutian spoke to me about his last move: Old Monkey Hangs Up His Badge. He said the secret of that move was to turn back. I didn't understand his meaning at the time, I thought he was unable to keep up with changing times...

  • Gong Er: I had considered a career in opera years ago, I had received training. I had thought about it a lot: me on stage performing, and you in the audience watching...

Ip Man: What if your performance had sold out?

Gong Er: [smiles] You flatter me. I would have reserved a seat specifically for you.
