The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Bright Easton Ellis. The story takes place in a wealthy liberal arts university (Conton University) in New England in the 1980s . A triangular relationship emerged between the three young people. They were Sean Bateman (James Van der Beek) who bought and sold drugs part-time, and Paul Owen (Ian Suo) who was bisexual.
