The filming copyright of the film was initially purchased by actor Lawrence Harvey, but since then the copyright has been changed many times, and finally it was handed over to Peter Weir to start shooting.
The film is adapted from the memoirs of Polish military officer Slavomir Lavitz. This memoir, titled "The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom" (The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom), was published in 1956. It was not written by Ravits himself, but by British journalist Ronald Downing. "Long Long Road" has been translated into 25 languages and sold 500,000 copies worldwide.
In 2006, the BBC made a documentary about the escape story of Slavormir Lavitz.
