"The Tower of Babel
" "Bible · Old Testament · Genesis" chapter 11, when mankind united to build a tower that hoped to lead to heaven. In order to stop mankind's plan, God made mankind speak different languages, so that mankind can communicate with each other Can't communicate, the plan fails because of this, and human beings have been scattered since then."
In the movie, at the village's celebration party, the train station commander's daughter, Monica, has a crush on the handsome American soldier David, but can't communicate with him, and David is not like Like his other comrades-in-arms, they could kiss and hug a woman without saying anything, so the two just smiled at each other, and the scene was awkward. Monica finds help from Andrei, the most unremarkable scruffy kid in the village, but he speaks English. This is a very interesting passage. When Andrei translated the dialogue between Monica and David, he put his personal feelings into it. David
asked how old Monica was. Monica said that she was 18 years old. Andrei translated that she was only 17 years old.
When we were friends, David smiled and said to Monica that you were so cute, and reached out to hold her. Monica asked Andrei to translate David's words. Andrei said that David replied "more than one", and then David couldn't help saying to Monica, "You are very cute, And I want to kiss you", at this time Monica looked at Andrei blankly, but the translation was "he asked what kind of music you like", Monica was confused by this question, and after thinking for a long time, she said "No specific, many I like all types", then Andrei came over to translate "she said she didn't like you flattering", so David let go of Monica's hand embarrassedly.
Monica doesn't know that Andrei has a crush on her all the time, and she always sends her some explicit text messages anonymously, and Andrei often stares at Monica's body with nosebleeds. In the end, Andrei's little conspiracy did not stop the spread of love between the two. When he went to the party in the city that day, Andrei watched Monica and David making out in pain, but he couldn't do anything. (Finally found another abandoned girl who said that men are animals and just want to do that, Andrei went to comfort her, and the two sat together until dawn.)
In the end, when the Americans were leaving, David wanted Monica to leave him a phone number, Monica smiled and wrote something on David's hand and left. Back on the train, outside the window was the platform where the night left, David opened his palm, and he didn't see the number, but the sun drawn by Monica.

American Dream
Marian is a temporary translator for Romania and the United States, he likes the clothes of the American soldiers, so he got a US military shirt. Because he has always stood with the Americans, when he came to the village, the local girls thought he was also an American soldier, so they approached him and made out with him. Marian took the plan and pretended that he did not understand Romanian and made out with them until finally, the United States The people's train finally got official permission. When they were about to leave, the girls came to Marian and asked him to take them away. Marian replied in fluent Romanian that he was just going to the local town of Turnu. The two girls were desperate.
When the Americans first came to the village, the mayor decided to hold an anniversary celebration (which greatly exceeded the village's annual budget), which he thought would be a good way to spread the name of the town to the United States, so as to attract more people come here to invest. So the whole town began to rush preparations. Young girls wore low-cut dresses and short skirts. Workers planned a peaceful march. The humble radio station began to play American music. Abundant food was put on the table. The Elvis-like singer sang "Love me tender".
America, represents freedom, wealth, rights, desires, and dreams. Many people have an American dream in their hearts. Compared to the poverty and boredom of a small Romanian village, they think that everything in America is so good (Monica's bedroom, posted by Hollywood stars). They believe that the arrival of the United States can change the status quo of the village, enrich their lives, and help them overthrow the hegemony...I don't know much about politics and history, but I know the role the United States played at that time - to maintain peace come. When Colonel Jones stood in front of the villagers, as a leader, he instigated the masses to defeat Doiaru with righteous words, what I saw was sadness and evil. In the end, the Americans failed to help this group of hopeful villagers. It was just violence within the village, leaving an irreversible tragic end.

Memories
There are many black and white images interspersed in the film. I didn't know what it meant at first, but later I found out that it was Doiaru's childhood memories. In the war-torn era, Romania was in turmoil, Doiaru's parents entrusted him to an uncle to raise him when he was young, and they both left him. They told Doiaru to wait for the arrival of the Americans. Doiaru waited decades for the arrival of the Americans. He learned English, but it never came in handy. Until this time, when the train carrying the Americans was stopped, in order to pass the pass, the Americans were not open to bribery. Doiaru is the opposite of most people in the village who welcome the United States. He hates American politics, hegemony, and those people. He has rights, he doesn't flatter Americans, he scolds "Fuck Clinton" at the American colonel.
The daughter was brought up by Doiaru. Monica's mother died when she was born. Doiaru sometimes looked at Monica as if he saw his wife. He loved this daughter, but he couldn't control her. He hoped for her daughter. Study hard and go to university, but my daughter hangs around with some boys all day long and is not educated. The ideological gap between the two generations of people with different experiences is already too great. When he saw that his daughter later mixed with the American soldier, Doiaru was quite angry and rushed out to pull the two who were getting close. Monica growled "you never understand" on the side. In the end, when Doiaru listened to the lie and was going to fight the gypsy who stole things, Monica told Doiaru before he left that she was going to go to university, which became the last word Doiaru heard from her daughter.

The swaying follow-up shots
, frequent scene transitions, complex scene scheduling, dislocation of sound and picture space, etc. add realism, rhythm and detail to the film. The shooting seems random, but I believe these have been calculated accurately. The suggestive processing of the picture can be seen everywhere. Here are just a few examples:
The vision of Doiaru brewing coffee early in the morning and pouring it is a scene of war raging on TV.
When Doiaru and Vacily were talking, the train was just stopped outside, and the phone was ringing inside, hinting at the next shift.
This is a complete follow-up shot: Monica gets up from bed early in the morning, the voiceover is a radio broadcast (doesn't understand Romanian, I believe the news is also related to the film), Monica enters the corridor, opens the curtains, and sees her ex-boyfriend standing outside the window Downstairs, I immediately closed the curtains again, went to the refrigerator to get a cup of water, picked up the headgear, walked into the house, closed the bedroom door, and at the same time there was a knock on the door outside the picture, the camera followed the knock and turned to the door, it was in front of Vacily. Come and report to Doiaru, Doiaru was having breakfast and let Vacily eat the chicken on the plate and then made the picture, Vacily picked the meat hesitantly, the camera swayed between his head and the plate, the voiceover was Doiaru's question, after Vacily answered Takes a bite of the chicken and throws it out the window when he looks out of the picture and says "good morning ma'am" and pans, it's Monica coming in, standing in the house and going out, panning back to Vacily Wiping the oil on the napkin on the table with her hands, the picture panned to Doiaru who was getting dressed, shook her head and said, "Let's go", Vacily entered the painting and left with Doiaru.
PS: There is a technical problem that I haven't figured out. Monica opened the door in a dark room and came out into the bright outdoors. The camera followed the shot, and the black and white contrast was great, but there was no exposure transition when the film was shot. And when I was shooting with DV, every time I went from the dark room to the outside, the image would turn white for a while before I could be demobilized. I believe that this is not just a machine problem, there should also be a technical solution.
