Mamoru Hosoda, Ambition and Limitations

Probably because I didn't have any expectations from the beginning, I can't say I was very disappointed. I can't bear to give three stars, but I can't live up to the fare if I focus on the skill of moving the mirror and the exquisite pictures when fighting.
If it wasn't for the two-and-a-half-month-long release of this film, and in late September, it was still hanging in theaters and lined up twice a day, I would probably have missed it. Combining all the elements that I hate again, human and beasts, cultivation, saving the world, life and death, even the lines of the trailer are weakly written, a parent-child story of teenagers and monsters.
From the beginning, I watched people complain. Isn't this an extension of the story of the rain in the wolf child Yuxue? Not only that, but the characters have also crossed over to the girl and eva.
When I saw the preview, I was thinking how the character design of Zhenben Yoshiyuki would be so out of tune this time, the ugly pig on the side, and a group of extras with similar faces, the setting is so amateurish that it is outrageous. When I looked at the production list, I found that there was no Zhenmoto at all. It was all done by Hosoda Mamoru himself. The style of painting was so close to Zhenmoto that the heroine's face was no different from Konno Makoto. The name is still called Maple, and Matsushima Maple is still Rukawa Maple.
The plot is so thin that people can't laugh or cry. When I look at the original Hosoda's fixed script, Okuji Sadoko has also been removed. The middle two teenagers refused to obey the control. The middle two teenagers and the middle two bears fought inexplicably. Another middle two teenagers killed the middle two bears because of the middle two in their hearts (the result did not die), and the middle two teenagers and the middle two bears merged into one sword. Subdued the villain (Master will always live in my heart, in every sense).
I can't help but deeply doubt that this second is the true reflection of Hosoda's heart, because the script is really second, all the progress of the plot depends on the male protagonist's illness, and the climax depends on the dead. If the bear is replaced by a kappa, this film will become a fan work of Journey to the West. There are people, pigs, monkeys, and kappa. The four of them also spent a day studying the scriptures.
But Mamoru Hosoda succeeded after all, and the script with so many flaws that could not stand up to logical scrutiny brought him another peak in his career. In 45 days of its release, it exceeded 4 million viewers at the box office of 5.1 billion yen, exceeding the first half of the year. The second box office of Conan Yehuo's Sunflower was 4.4 billion, which also surpassed the 4.2 billion of his last work Wolf Child Yuxue.
Son of the Monster's cinema ration is Hall 457, which is on par with Ghibli, and the determination of Toho and Nippon TV to support him is very clear.
If Summer Wars blends virtual and reality just right through the medium of the computer, Son of the Monster's path through Shibuya doesn't really combine fantasy and reality. It can be seen that the summer battle has a deep impact on Hosoda. There is also a powerful rabbit boss in the son of monsters, and there is a powerful whale. When it goes black, it will turn into a black hole that devours everything.
The male protagonist travels between the two worlds and finally chooses to return to human society. The motives are unknown. If he reluctantly uses emotion as his motive, the girl is portrayed like a wall flower. The evil forces are destroying Shibuya, and the two have time to spare. Love to take the subway and confess by the way. It's just that the girl's teaching ability should not be underestimated. In just a few months, a high school student used a small amount of extracurricular time to teach a child who could not even read a whale pseudonym at the level of a third-year elementary school student to the level that he could take the scholastic examination of the third-year high school.
I originally wanted to praise Hosoda's advantages, such as the depiction of battle scenes, and some delicate details, but in front of the weak plot, these are all illusions. The biggest impression is that the supervisor yearns for youthful blood, but in fact he does not have youthful blood in his heart, and he can't even lay out a relationship.
I have never liked Shinkai Makoto because the pictures are beautiful and the storytelling ability is poor. Makoto Shinkai is such a piece of Hosoda Shou, who insists on his own character design and his own script. Now it seems that at least Makoto Shinkai's character design is much better than that of Superintendent Hosoda. As if influenced by Hayao Miyazaki, animation supervisors always pursue the original script supervisor trinity, but not everyone is a genius like Hayao Miyazaki. People always have shortcomings, like Takada Xun can't draw at all and it doesn't affect him as an amazing animation director at all. No matter what kind of business success he has, Hosoda Mamoru is not the one I expected to see.
So I have only one question left, Mamoru Hosoda, are you inflated?

(7/10) Compared with the first three works, this time there are no surprises. Although it is not disappointing, the desire to rewatch is not as strong as the previous works. Every work of Mamoru Hosoda will add thinking about life in science fiction and magic, but this time I feel that I have stopped before I go a little deeper. I want to talk too much, but it is very shallow. What left a deep impression on me is actually the scene. Not many heroines......

Too few three stars, too many four stars

The Boy and the Beast quotes

  • Kaede: You know what? I've been asking myself something. "Why am I holding Ren's hand and running away with him? Here I am, scared to death, so why am I doing it? Then I remembered something. How incredibly happy I was when we first met and we started studying together. I mean, there's nobody else who enjoys studying as much as you. When I'm with you, it gives me the courage to keep going too. And right now, it's the same. Ren, if you're going to fight, then I'm staying with you. Don't forget, neither of us is ever fighting alone.

  • Kaede: Everyone of us carries that darkness equally. Ren carries it, and so do I. But I'm still struggling as hard as I can, even now. That's why there's no way Ren can lose to you who were so easily swallowed by the darkness. There's no way we're going to lose!
