In the depths of the ocean: unrealistic drifting with meticulous craftsmanship

This is a wonderful week.
While watching Ron Howard and "Brother Hammer" Chris Hemsworth's 2013 old work "Fast Wind" in China, "The Depths of the Sea", which they collaborated for the second time, has been painted overseas. .
Regardless of the quality of the two pieces, this illusion of meeting across time and space is a very interesting and ironic thing at the same time.
Unfortunately, this kind of thing is not the first, and it will not be the last.

Warner Bros., a fleeting disadvantage, still can't lift up the spirits of the sprint at the end of the year. For this veteran company with a lot of high-quality resources in 2015, it was not comfortable: Except for the box office of "Doomsday Collapse", in addition to the win-win situation of "Mad Max 4" and "Cui Di", it seems that other movies do not matter. How the investment is and how the reputation is, all the big and small are all down to the jade plate.
The scary thing is that none of these "other movies" is a fuel-efficient lamp in terms of investment scale: the nasty driver's sister and brother "Jupiter Ascend" had a budget of 176 million at the beginning of the year, while the local only took 47 million. The global box office has just passed the investment line; the annual budget of the blockbuster movie "Secret Agent" is a fraction of that of "Jupiter Upward". The local box office is not as good as "Jupiter Upward", and the global box office has just exceeded 100 million; King Kong The wolf’s self-destroying image is also helpless. "Peter Pan: A Dream Set Sail" has a budget of 150 million yuan again, and finally returned to the poor local 30 million. How about the world? But one hundred and twenty million.
With the words back to this point, even the surprisingly ugly female comedy follow-up "Hot Track" saved 34 million dollars, and still can only get back 50 million in the global box office.
Perhaps the decisive moment must be reserved for the final PK of DC Marvel, where the outcome of next year has been divided, because this "Deep Ocean" at the end of the year is just a beautiful-looking movie.
As the "economical version of Spielberg," Ron Howard obviously has a wider coverage of interests and is more accessible to the people. Compared with director work, he also seems to prefer the title of producer. It is undeniable that Ron Howard's unique narrative skills and artistic sense are important skills that can upgrade mediocre scripts.
But some books are really hard to save.
For example, "The Depths of the Ocean".
As one of the many survival movies this year, "Depth of the Sea" did not stand out between "Death Altitude" and "Miner 33". The pace is slow, the relationship between the characters lacks foreshadowing, excavation and development, and the plot is empty and weak. Like "Desperate Altitude", a bunch of very good actors was wasted in vain.
As the male lead actor of the film, Chris Hemsworth is a young actor with both appearance, ambition and strength. Just a few years, went from "Captain Kirk his father" to "Thor" to "legendary rider" leap, comparable to "nice" to "The Hangover"
and then to "American Sniper" cloth Radley Cooper.
Coincidentally, both of them achieved a qualitative leap only after they had joined hands with the famous director.
But for "Brother Hammer", the ambitious "Depth of the Ocean" is far from an ideal masterpiece.
In short, the short board is too short and the long board is too long.
Since the story itself is the prototype story of the immortal masterpiece "Moby Dick", it is natural to insert a layered structure of the author's perspective in the film. There is nothing wrong with this method. Both "Boyman π" and "Budapest Hotel" adopted the same method, and there was no problem with the length ratio and rhythm, which became a good adjustment for the compact plot.
But if the plot itself is not good, it becomes very cumbersome. A few years ago, "Shounen Pi" and "Depth of the Ocean" have great similarities in themes, but the latter is far less rich in content than the former, meaningless disputes, meticulous technical details, and this year One of the most artistically beautiful and hierarchical pictures serves as the main material to fill the connotation of the story.
However, pure artistic standards cannot make up for the lack of spiritual motivation. For most of the film, the time sense and ideological level of the story and the characters are in a state of stagnation, which makes the plot that should be gradually advanced appear thin and long, even in the key plot of moral choices and ideological struggles. The above is already below the level of hesitating and stopping, and it has become a perfunctory deal.
Desperate is not desperate, but the sense of hope is full.
What kind of life is there for this?

Where the story is not implemented, empty praise of people's courage and determination will not bring a deeper emotional resonance. This is the biggest shortcoming of "The Depths of the Sea". The various characters in the movie seem to be integrated, but in fact they are on the surface. When the conflict between the characters and the drama fails to attract the attention of the audience, what is left is an old-fashioned sailing adventure story with a clichéd protagonist. The irony is that the differences between "Deep Ocean" and "Moby Dick" are exactly what is ignored in this film. The lack of social significance behind the story makes the film ultimately reduced to a serious film relying on special effects to promote the development of the story.
I wanted to get out of "Moby Dick", but still didn't run out of the sphere of influence of "Moby Dick".

BTW, Hammer’s most surprising performance this year should be the following:

▤ "We're supreme creatures made in God's own likeness. Earthly kings whose business it is to circumnavigate the planet bestowed to us. To bend nature to our will. → U really feel like a earthly king after everything that we've been through ?We're nothing. We're specks. And dust."

Deconstruct "Moby Dick". (There is a detail: even if you change from a big ship to a small boat, the first officer still symbolically equips it with an anchor with a small object) Finally, the mention of oil-"oil from land", seems to be another cycle of human forgetfulness. .

  • Old Thomas Nickerson: [from trailer] We were headed for the edge of sanity... like we were aberrations, phantoms. Trust gave way to doubt. Hope to superstition.

  • Owen Coffin: [points his pistol at Owen] Say it! Say it! Say you're scared!

    Owen Chase: I will not.
