Bang Bang Club 20 years later

I think it's because I had high expectations for this drama, and for various reasons, it was inevitable that I watched the drama and felt a little disappointed.

How can a 2-hour movie explain this complicated and bloody history.

First of all, I think the two actors, Kevin Carter and Ken O, should be swapped. I always thought Ken would be the protagonist, and in the original, Ken was indeed the leader of the team. Ken is the earliest and most mature of the four. After Ken's death, the members more or less romanticized him and his death, but this continued Ken's position as the spiritual leader.

Second, the real Kevin is much worse than the one portrayed in the movie. He has a bad temper, is an alcoholic, and is addicted to drugs. His messy life has many aspects, like his childhood, his self-defeating father, his love life, and so on. When his famous photo won the Pulitzer Prize, it also brought him more controversy and trouble, and even eventually led to his suicide.

Every member of Bang Bang Club, in fact, there are many times not only the four of them, they are all surrounded by the shadow of perennial war and killing. I've often thought that if I'd been there, I'd use my love to soothe Ken's heart, but I wouldn't want to be near Kevin.

No one knows what really happened to the cursed photo and the fate of the little girl in it. However, my good friend, who is also a friend of Bang Bang Club, told me that he believed that, with the Kevin he knew, he wouldn't leave there without making sure the girl's life was safe. My friend's guess is that there should be a rescue station nearby, and Kevin must have realized that someone from a rescue organization was coming to chase away the eagle and save the little girl before he left.

My buddy was filming next to Ken when he was shot; afterward, he reassured Ken's girlfriend who was on the brink of breaking up at the end of the hospital hallway. I actually wanted to ask him a lot of questions about that day, about Ken, but I knew that these memories must be very hard for him. It's not that I'm not curious, but that I care too much about him and don't want to make him a little sad.

Once, I would walk into the office of my boss at the time, look at the busy man and ask him: You have been to so many battlefields and experienced so many historical moments, 30 years ago, would you have thought that you would be in 30 years? In Beijing, and then have me as your subordinate?

He usually looks at me, then pretends to be helpless and says, "Yeah, I don't understand, why did I fall into your hands."

I often think that life is really amazing and you never know what will happen until the last moment. If Ken was still alive, he would also come to China one day and be based in Beijing. He will meet me, we will fall in love, and be together happily, like a fairy tale.

Although I was only a child when he left, I had no idea that there was such a place in the world as South Africa. However, after so many years, I fell in love with him, this man who is already in another world, he is the perfect boyfriend in my heart.

One day, not very far, I'll go to Johannesburg, and I'll date Greg, bring Joao, and see Ken and let him know that even after all these years, he's still attractive.

PS: Joao is almost a big supporting role in the play, maybe he didn't want to be too high-profile during the shooting. Joao has been active on the battlefield photography stage until last year, when he stepped on a landmine while working in Afghanistan and blew both of his feet. However, he is a miraculously strong man. After just 8 months of reconstruction, he has started to work with a pair of prosthetic limbs installed, and the photos he took have been on PAGE 1 of the New York Times. Yesterday was Joao's birthday, and he later said on Facebook that he was going to undergo another operation soon, and if he recovered well, he would return to his home in South Africa to continue his efforts. Greg has a website for Joao, let's cheer him on and help him through this difficult time!

  • Kevin Carter: They're right. All those people who say it's our job to just sit and watch people die. They're right.
