Remember my first Hitchcock

Hitchcock was recommended by one of my senior sisters. She was in high school with me and is now a graduate student at Nankai University. I have been following this sister on the Internet, and I admire her very much. So, I've always wanted to see Hitchcock's movies. Rarely, a typhoon came, and the school was suspended. Tonight, I watched my first Hitchcock film, "Butterfly Dream".
The movie is really good and the story is not complicated, but every character in the movie, even a dog, is quite intriguing. However, watching two hours of black and white is really challenging for me, especially a depressing film. Finally, of course, I also like Hitchcock. It's rare to fall in love with a director, and there are still a lot of works. I'm not afraid of film shortages in my sophomore year.
Uneasy Cinderella.
She is the purest and the most pitiful person in the movie, sticking three labels in a row at the beginning, and using the most words. Because the character of this character is really so obvious. She is simple, and probably has never had any relationship with other men except for her father, whom she has mentioned lightly. She can't resist Maxim's pursuit, and she can't resist her own lust for love. Once the contact started, she must be unable to extricate herself to fall in love with Maxim, and this love, in my opinion, is more because she has not been deeply involved in the world. So, it's a very unequal relationship.
Of course, at the same time, this love also made her the most pitiful person. Because of love, so care, so fear. Therefore, she could not avoid living in the shadow of her first wife, Rebecca. From the moment she entered Manderley, her nightmare began. Whether it was a servant, a relative, a beast, or a small object in the room, she felt deep malice. All people and things carry Rebecce's mark, and these marks are like a net, to surround her and wrap her tightly, she can't break free. Later, she decides to change, she burns Rebecce's objects, she wants to re-host the masquerade, and she tries to disarm the environment. It's a pity that he fell into the tricks of the housekeeper.
During the Manderley days, she kept telling Maxim that she loved him, that she held him tight, holding him with her own fears over and over again. She has always been cautious and tried her best to block the past. She even knocked over an object, but she didn't have the courage to admit it. She was just afraid that after turning herself in, it would involve too much of the object's past. What a pitiful person this is, I seem to see a trembling figure in the middle of the night.
A housekeeper who cannot save herself.
As soon as she comes out, the movie starts to get depressing. Expressionless, she has always been wearing a black dress with the neatest hairstyle on her head. This is not a kind person. She's been there since Rebecce married there. Maxim's sister said that she loves Rebecce deeply, and she has a supreme adoration for Rebecce. Here, maybe a misleading one. It looked as if she could not tolerate this second lady. She herself said that she didn't like watching her walk the road of Rebecce, and she didn't like her touching the things that Rebecc used. In short, she didn't want to see this second lady.
This is really a manifestation of the love of the master and the servant. She is loyal and loving, loyal to cleanliness, and loves cleanliness. She can't stand all changes and the outside world. She even tempted others to commit suicide. I noticed her colluding with Rebecce's cousin, I noticed her smile when she saw the unfavorable interrogation of Maxim, I noticed her hesitancy at the end to think about naming the doctor for Rebecce's reputation, and more importantly, , when she knew that it was good for Rebecce, she was quick to say it. All of this can be said to be a kind of spiritual cleanliness, and it can even reflect an extreme loyalty.
Especially, when she heard that those two people could live happily, she set Manderley on fire and she couldn't stand it. She can't accept the happiness of the moment, and can't stand the happiness of the moment. She believes that after Rebecce, the world should always be night. If there is day, it will be disrespectful to the master. In the end, she took her own life in the master's room. At this time, this love has lost its loyalty and is only extreme. She has been unable to achieve self-redemption, such a housekeeper further highlights the ubiquitous Rebecce.
Rebecce everywhere.
The character never appears in the movie, she has no actor. However, she is everywhere in the movie. From the very beginning the vulgar lady mentioned that it was a beautiful woman that Maxim could not forget, and then everything about Manderley. Even the fear of Cinderella, or the extreme of the housekeeper. All of this emphasises Rebecca's presence, that presence everywhere.
She is beautiful. The honest secretary said she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Therefore, she cannot appear. Only by living in the imagination of people can she be the most beautiful. Because of this beauty, she convinced Maxim in just four days. A woman's beauty is the best capital of love. But she doesn't love. This is two extremes with Cinderella. She clearly understands that love will bring harm and restraint, and she is a bohemian beauty.
So, she seemed to be vicious, she made that kind of deal with Maxim, she had an ambiguous relationship with her cousin behind her husband's back, and even bought a house in London by herself, doing some shady things, which seemed really bad Terrific woman. However, at the end of the film it was clarified. She hid her kindest and weakest self in the deepest part of her heart. When she learned that she had cancer, she was dying. Doctors say she has only a few months left. However, she just said, it won't take so long. So she pissed Maxim off with her pregnancy, and ended up taking her own life. Here, in my opinion, is a kind of love, abusive love, very selfish love.
Even though I never understood why she was in a relationship with such a kitsch cousin, she still had to be the person I would love and fall in love with the most, and the person I would fear. I am both the Cinderella and the housekeeper.
It turned out that it was already so late, and there was almost no hot water, so I ended up in a hurry, so I wrote it here. Looking forward to the next Hitchcock!

The first half is an ancient house Gothic in the Victorian period, and the second half is a dog-blooded family ethics drama. Hitchcock fashioned yet another MacGuffin of attractions: Rebecca.

Rebecca quotes

  • Mrs. de Winter: I wish I were a woman of 36, dressed in black satin with a string of pearls!

  • Maxim de Winter: You thought I loved Rebecca? You thought that? I hated her!
