May all mentally ill live in their own paradise

"Blood Orphan", the translation of the title is very subtle, but also very appropriate. The voice of a murderous schizophrenic in his own world is this orphan.

The film shows the inner world of a schizophrenic from a peculiar perspective. It is like an adapted fairy tale, filtering out the blood; filtering out the horror; filtering out all the negative emotions. It tells the truth to the audience through the switch between the protagonist's subjective perspective and the realistic perspective.

When the protagonist takes medicine, the house is dark, the ground is littered with filth and blood, the boxes of chopped corpses are so shocking, and of course the severed heads in the refrigerator.

Even the protagonist does not want to see or dare to see all this, so when the protagonist pours out the pills, the house is restored to its former light, the whole picture is very warm, everything is in order, even the heads in the refrigerator are talking and laughing .

As a schizophrenic patient, the protagonist can often hear some voices talking to him, and he projects these voices on the things around him, the rabbit made of socks when he was a child, and the cat and dog he keeps now.

The split personality has both a good side like a "dog" and an evil side like a "cat". But the protagonist is often unable to withstand the temptation of the cat. After murdering, he makes mistakes again and again. The dog first suggested him to surrender, and finally suggested that he commit suicide.

At the end of the film, the protagonist finally stopped listening to the cat's words and chose to be burned to death. So far, this is a story that is both beautiful, sad and cruel, but this film also has a comedy label, so at the end of the film, the protagonist comes to a clean "paradise", where those he cares about are with him. Dance and play together, it seems that there is never a hindrance.

As a schizophrenic, the protagonist cannot control his own behavior, but no matter what, he still violates the law. He is both pitiful and hateful. The film fully expresses the pitiful side of the protagonist, but weakens the hateful side, which is only reflected through a fugue cat and a few real-world shots.

Of course, this is the director's style choice, which is conducive to showing the inner world of the protagonist and highlighting his emotional expression. For a schizophrenic patient, although it is not complete, the director did not completely beautify it, and still gave enough realistic shots to tell the audience the real situation.

As for the final credits, if there was no such thing, the whole film is still a little blocked, and some viewers may sigh after watching it. But such a mess can be regarded as lighting up its comedy label. The last thing I can say is, "May all mentally ill people finally live happily in the world they imagined."

The Voices quotes

  • Bosco: Hey Jerry?

    Jerry Hickfang: Yeah?

Bosco: You remember last week when you said that there was an invisible line that separates good from evil and you'd thought you crossed it and I said no no no you're a good boy?

Jerry Hickfang: Yeah I remember, so what?

    Bosco: I've changed my opinion.

  • Fiona: Friday I had a pretty cushy gig. Had lots of friends, I was the office hottie... now I'm a severed head in a fridge. Sucks to be me, Jerry.
