"Ashes of Time" opened on September 21, 1992, and was filmed in Yulin, Shaanxi in June 1993. The lonely smoke in the desert, the yellow sand blocking the sun, and the flowing water of peach blossoms all originate from Hongshi Gorge in Yulin, Shaanxi. The crew of "Ashes of Time" chose Yulin, Shaanxi to go to the peach blossom forest there. But when the crew started on September 21, 1992, Taohua had already died, and the director could only start filming in a desert.
When the crew was shooting in the Red Stone Gorge Scenic Area in Yulin, the conditions were very difficult. Not only was the sandstorm heavy, but the actors and staff had to drive three or four hours to the studio every day. During the more than a year of shooting in Yulin, Leslie Cheung was the only actor who had been filming in Yulin from start to finish and was the last to leave.
