Filmed in the spring of 1995, the film was adapted from Joe Carol Oates' " Confessions of a Girl Gang ", which is considered the "most emotional and most sloppy" novel by the famous American female writer Joyce Carol Oates . The novel, critics hailed it as a "repeatedly engaging, time and again shocking novel of female revenge, valor and perseverance". Since its publication in 1993, the novel "Foxfire" has been subject to controversy, with both praise and criticism even going to two extremes.
