Director Carpenter initially preferred the British actor Jason Statham to play the Martian criminal James, but the senior decision makers of Screen Gems hope to use the rapper O'Shea Jackson Sr. After the initial meeting with O'Shea Jackson Sr., Carpenter modified the role of James for O'Shea Jackson Sr.
The original heroine, Courteney Love accidentally sprained an ankle during the training camp, and announced that she had quit filming. Only a few weeks before the filming started, Carpenter finally chose Natasha Henstridge to replace the heroine.
In order to let the actors concentrate on their roles without worrying about the dangers of the action scenes, the film invited stunt director Jeff Imoda to conduct intensive training for the actors. Including personal experience of the effective range of the weapons used in the film under the guidance of prop masters and weapon experts.
