University professor Lawrence Whitherhold is a typical representative of literary giants. He has a head full of wisdom and is full of talent. He is a well-deserved authority in the field of Victorian literature. But Lawrence is too domineering and arrogant when dealing with the people and things around him, and has become self-controlled to the point of being a little indifferent. A teacher like him is naturally the kind of "old-fashioned" hated by students. Lawrence's personality, when faced with family and love problems, is more like a boy, completely hesitant and confused.
Lawrence's wife has passed away, and as a single dad raising his teenage daughter Vanessa alone, he's been sleepwalking through this confusing and unhappy middle age. Even his daughter, a high-achieving student who inherited his brain and speaks bitterly, is eager to leave this cold home as soon as possible.
At this moment, Lawrence's brother Chuck, who always does wrong things and is only good at free food, suddenly appeared in front of him with his luggage, and he planned to stay here for a long time. Later, Lawrence also stumbled upon his former student, Janet Hartigan, who had been struck by him quite a bit as a student. Janet intends to retaliate and "fix" the grumpy Lawrence. A series of emergencies awakened Lawrence from the state of "hibernation". The peaceful life that had been calm was replaced by a ridiculous encounter, and it also helped him to find the meaning of life again   .

In fact, this kind of story is very elite. However, it is very easy to deal with. Smart people are people who know how to love, and people who know how to put down their airs and appreciate life. American themes about family, about life, about the middle class.

Smart People quotes

  • Bloomberg: I got to the third section where I noticed a certain marketable tone, the surly smarter-than-thou asshole tone.

  • Lawrence Wetherhold: I don't think you're very happy Vanessa.

Vanessa Wetherhold: Well, you're not happy. And you're my role model.
