On the eve of World War II, the 9-year-old girl Lissell and her brother were forced to send to a foster family in the outer suburbs of Munich. The 6-year-old brother unfortunately died on the road. After a deserted funeral, Lissell accidentally got her first book, The Gravedigger's Handbook. This will be one of the 14 books that will bring her infinite comfort. The father of this lonely child was captured by the Nazis, and his mother later disappeared. Under the guidance of her adoptive father, she learned to read. Despite the hardship of life, she found something more irresistible than food-books. She couldn't help but start stealing books. Lissell, the poor girl who was called the "book thief" by the god of death, worked hard to survive in war-torn Germany and unbelievably helped others who were also suffering.

The Book Thief quotes

  • Max Vandenburg: Where's my weather report?

Max Vandenburg: [Liesel shows a snow ball] You're full of wonders.

  • Liesel Meminger: There once was a ghost of a boy who liked to live in the shadows, so he wouldn't frighten people. His job was to wait for his sister, who was still alive. She wasn't afraid of the dark, because she knew that's where her brother was. At night, when darkness came to her room, she would tell her brother about the day. She would remind him how the sun felt on his skin, and what the air felt like to breathe, or how snow felt on his tongue. And that reminded her that she was still alive.
