The film is based on Duke Ellington's novel "A Night in the Jungle in Harlem" after more than 60 revisions. Although it is an introduction to the matter between two pairs of black and white brothers, it is actually an introduction to the open and secret struggle between underworld gangs. As far as the style of the whole film is concerned, the director broke through the model of underworld movies established by himself, and used flowing images, precise sound and creative editing to show a world of underworld in Harlem in the 1930s. The film won the Ballon d'Or "Best Director" and "Best Film" nominations in 1985 , Oscars "Best Film Editing" and "Most Living Set" nominations, and won the British BAFTA FILM AWARD "Best Costume" in 1986 "Award and the same year's "Best Sound" nomination.
