The film was inspired by the French novelist Thierry Jonquet's "Tarantula". Almodóvar was exposed to the original novel in 2001, the French novelist Terry Jonquet's novel "Tarantula". The original novel involves some rather adult and extreme themes, and this has become the focus of Almodovar's adaptation of the script. With the writing of the script, the story of Almodovar gradually deviated from the original plot of the novel. Except for what Almodovar himself called the "story about the violence and vendetta of Dr. Ledgerde", the story of the film can be said to have little connection with the story of the novel. Therefore, the film differs greatly from the original book. This is Almodovar's first attempt at a horror theme. The heroine was still Penelope Cruz when it was first announced in 2009. In the book, the fate of many characters are intertwined like a spider web, and the multi-clue narrative structure is exactly what Almodovar is good at. While writing the script, Almodovar admitted that he was influenced by George Fransch's "Eyes without a Face" and Franz Lang's works. And he once wanted to shoot the film into a silent black and white film, but finally gave up this idea and chose to shoot a film with his own characteristics.

People looked very powerful, but they were actually the poorest creatures, as long as there was love, hatred, and shame.
