Ben Affleck went to the CIA headquarters in Langley to make a field trip and study for the film. Accompanied by special agents, he visited various CIA equipment and met with Russian analysts.
The aircraft carrier that appears in the film is the USS CVN-74 "Stannis" aircraft carrier.
Matt Damon once appeared as a waiter in the film, but his pictures were eventually cut.
The title of the film is derived from the speech of Winston Churchill.
Seren Sid, who plays Russian President Nemorov, did not speak Russian at all before he appeared in the film. He learned most of the Russian lines in the film within two weeks.
When shooting desert scenes, many Panavision cameras of the crew failed due to high temperature.
At the end of the film, Nemorov’s speech originated from a speech by John F. Kennedy.
"The Sum of Terrors" is the first American film allowed to enter the Kremlin.
In order to study the role in more depth, the film's lead actor Ben Affleck went to Maryland to visit the author Tom Clancy .
