A comparison, personal preference

Compared with it, Zweig's "Letter from a Strange Woman" has no depth of thought - it is only a beautiful description in the literary sense, there is no exploration of life, no torture of belief, and no self-seeing. Attempt at redemption. —to describe a depraved liking. Xu Jinglei's remake is even less interesting, not even the exquisite form.
I think it at least tells us, "No ambition is big enough to break someone's heart", and what the heroine Meg said to Justin at the end, "When a light goes out, we'll all be very sad. Sad, but if you pursue your life well, your lamp can continue to light up and bring us hope."

The Thorn Birds quotes

  • Dane O'Neill: Mom, is this you? Oh, you were beautiful.

Meggie Cleary: Were? Oh the cruelty of youth.

Fiona 'Fee' Cleary: It was a lovely dress. Blue wasn't it?

Meggie Cleary: No, Mum, yours was blue.

Ralph de Bricassart: Meggie's dress was rose. "Ashes of Roses", it was called. And in it, she was the most beautiful thing any of us had ever seen.

  • Ralph de Bricassart: How will we live without him?

Meggie Cleary: We will. Your God gathers in the good ones... and leaves the living to those of us whom fail. Your greedy God! There *is* no peace with him!
