fatal tragedy

This article was first published on the public account: Portraits of Youth

The story originated from a misunderstanding,

Ultimately leads to a tragedy for a family.

Everyone is caught in a cycle, just like the foxtrot, no matter how you dance, it will eventually return to the starting point

Feldman

Mr. Feldman was in a state of great grief and trance when he was informed that his son who was serving had died on the battlefield. He numbly obeyed the funeral arrangements made by the government officials, and even needed a reminder to drink water. He went to the mental hospital to tell his mother the news, but she didn't look sad. Feldman silently received everyone who came, but he couldn't express the huge pain in his heart. He could only numb himself by scalding his hands with boiling water.

After the funeral arrangements were gone, the two soldiers told Feldman that his son was not dead, but the soldier with the same name as Jonathan. At this time, Feldman was like the rest of his life, and passed out emotionally. But after experiencing this, Feldman lost his mind and insisted on taking Jonathan home, and his excitement at this moment formed a huge contrast with the silence of the grief just now. Feldman ignored everyone's obstruction and called someone to take his son home.

When he lost his son, the great sadness made him silent and calm. The point that touched his emotional outburst was the lingering regret after the loss.

Unfortunately, Jonathan was killed in a car accident on his way home, and Feldman's efforts became the driving force behind the real loss of his son , and the originally cancelled funeral was held as scheduled.

There are many round objects [tables, drinking glasses, etc.] and rotating lenses in the movie

Daphna

When Daphna learned the news of her son's death, she fainted in grief and was skillfully injected with tranquilizers by the police. After she woke up, she was told that it was not her son who died, but another soldier with the same name. Makes Daphna ecstatic. When her husband wanted to take Jonathan home, she tried unsuccessfully to stop him, and when she finally learned that Jonathan died on the road, her heart was filled with resentment towards her husband.

As early as 20 years ago, when Daphna learned that she was pregnant, she was not ready to give birth to him, but her husband's repeated persuasion allowed Daphna to keep the child. Twenty years later, because her husband made her lose her again, the loss after a 20-year interval brought Daphna pain that would never go away.

Daphna plays the role of a mother throughout the film, tasked with bearing the belated loss of her child. From the coma convulsions at the beginning, the whole thing became as uncontrollable as her body, and the blows made her fall into despair. There is a character that has been neglected, Jonathan, who really died, and his family must be equally sad and unacceptable in the face of the sudden bad news.

For Daphna, it wasn't the war that killed her son, but it did leave many families with the same pain as her.

Jonathan

Jonathan, who was mistaken for the dead, was a soldier stationed on a supply route, where there was no war, not even passing vehicles, and only camels pass by every day. He didn't know that he was "killed", and all he had to worry about every day was the barracks that was about to sink into the sand.

The boring life brought invisible pressure to these soldiers. During a routine inspection, a soda can was mistaken for a grenade, causing a carload of innocent people to be shot to death. Although this incident was eventually covered up, Jonathan was also not punished for this and was called home, but he did not expect to be killed by a camel on the road.

Soldiers mistakenly killed civilians because of soda cans, but they were just a few children, performing their duty of guarding the border. What really caused these tragedies was the war. Jonathan's death was an accident, but its deep political critique is self-evident.

The two, who had lost their children, had a drink in the restaurant, and Feldman revealed his secret to his wife.

When he was a child, he stole the precious Bible from the family and exchanged it for a pornographic magazine, so that his mother broke down and suffered from mental illness.

When he grew up, he went to serve. During the march, he directed the people behind him to go first, triggering a mine and killing several people.

Whether unintentionally or intentionally , he never escaped the punishment of fate and lost his dearest son.

At the end of the film Feldman and Daphna hugged tightly and danced the foxtrot.

The pace of this movie is so slow that I even dozed off, but it is definitely a movie worth savoring, with an atmosphere of serenity and absurdity as a whole, with metaphors everywhere.

It is said that the inspiration for the film came from the director's daughter's brush with a terrorist attack, and it was with such a mood and thinking about the impermanence of life that the film was created.

Once they start dancing, they can no longer stop, there is no way to predict what will happen next, they can only face it bravely, this kind of helpless and forbearing emotion always surrounds them. Destiny has long planned a route and guides them invisibly forward. This inability to escape the tragedy itself stems from fate, and perhaps death is the final end of this circular dance.

In a ruthless fate,

No one can escape the cycle of fate.
