At the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, which ended in June this year, the new film "Young Ahmed" by the Darney brothers won the Best Director Award, and Chinese audiences will focus on meeting this film in these weeks. Mostly through the channels of the EU Film Festival.
When I came out of the theater, I heard so many demeaning voices that after the end I didn't hear too many people applauding the film that won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Is Young Ahmed bad?
"Young Ahmed" tells the story of Ahmed, a thirteen-year-old teenager who is in adolescence. He firmly believes in his religious beliefs, and is instigated by others. He finally chooses to assassinate his teacher three times under different circumstances. story.
The story is about the existence of extremist religions in Europe, but in fact, there is enough discussion about this in today's society. Since the terrorist attacks in Paris a few years ago, people have made a lot of discussions about immigration, heretical religions, and so on. This naturalistic work of the Darney brothers is indeed based on this.
There are many forms of discussion and many types of stories, depending on the method. First of all, the name of the movie is "Young" Ahmed. For me, when I don't understand the background of this movie before watching it, the three words "Young" will come to my eyes in advance. young? How young are you? I saw the movie and knew that I was still a child. It is very "young", it can even be said to be an age who will use his fighting spirit to compete with the whole world.
But small has a small advantage, because most people basically have a hard time figuring out what a child is thinking. Therefore, two perspectives are given to watch the film: from the perspective of young Ahmed and from the perspective of religion.
Would the story of "Young Ahmed" be ambiguous if told from a religious perspective? Because when Ahmed was about to assassinate his teacher the last time he raised a sharp weapon, it is difficult to judge what changed in Ahmed's heart. But this is actually precisely the benefit of the child as the hero of the movie. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, it is difficult for the child to judge what he is thinking. In fact, this is precisely the advantage of "Young Ahmed".
Maybe there is something that doesn't make sense? But what if you simply look at the heart of a thirteen-year-old child? I think the whole viewing process is excellent and the quality of the film is very good. The Darney brothers firmly hooked the audience's eyes with their skilled narrative skills, depicted Ahmed's inner changes incisively and vividly, and gave full play to the role of each character and scene. They talked about a thirteen-year-old boy whose heart It is a story of how to stubbornly resist the temptation of the outside world, how to angrily throw away what you think is impure and incorrect, and how to let go of your stubbornness.
The story of "Young Ahmed" is just that good, it's subtle enough and realistic enough. In a way, a perfect representation of a strike somewhere in Paris might not be a good idea (in a way!). At the same time, using children to talk about extreme religions has a high degree of fit, and children can't figure it out.
I have always preferred this kind of naturalistic shooting method, because it can effectively bring the characters and the audience closer. However, many viewers said that they did not understand the behavior of the protagonist after watching it? Because my mentality is still like a child’s in many cases, I will obviously get closer to Ahmed in the process of watching the movie, that is, “empathy”, but obviously most of the audience are from adults. It is obvious that the story to be watched from the viewpoint cannot be substituted.
So the question arises: how to watch "Young Ahmed"? Is it possible to separate the film with delicate language like a scalpel? Or with the host?
I prefer the latter, because I believe that children can understand, and I also think that this film does show the extreme behavior that children will have at the age of thirteen or fourteen, even if the extreme religion is replaced by something else. For example, a child who is extremely patriotic, because he can't stand other words to attack others.
So I think that's what's great about this film, it's talking about extreme religion, but it's in a child. It is not that Ahmed naturally accepts these extreme ideas, it is the extreme religion that drives Ahmed. Although the meanings are similar, or complement each other, they are still subtly different; driven by inner turmoil and speculation (Hasn't Ahmed almost given up? Facing girls), just like "Young Ahmed" It is the same as the shaking camera in De”, but I accept it naturally, and I must have a bowl of self-confidence in my heart.
To speculate on the film rather than the characters in subtle language is far from Ahmed. So I think the entrance to watching this movie is the characters.
