The coldest and darkest place

Perhaps the darkest and creepiest part of "Goodfellas" is its middle section, the opening scene of the film. Tommy, Jimmy, and Henry kill a big guy for a small spat and throw him in the trunk. On the way to bury the body, Tommy drove home to get the tools. His mother hadn't slept yet, and she was going to feed the three of them anyway. In this heartwarming scene, Tommy told his mother to borrow the terrifyingly large knife he was holding in his hand (like one used to kill pigs) to cut off a deer that got stuck in the car (he lied that he hit a deer when his mother saw the blood on him), his mother said yes, but remember to take it back - if she knew it was to cut people, How dare she use it again. Then his mother took out another picture she had drawn, and when the three of them saw the person in the picture, they said they really looked like him (the murdered gangster) and laughed. The bloody contrast in the warm scene is so gloomy and cold that it makes people want to vomit. However, there may be a loophole in the plot here. At the beginning of the movie, we know that the big guy in the trunk did not die kicking and kicking, which surprised the three of them. So if they all thought the big guy was dead, Tommy would have little reason to stab him with his mom's knife. Besides, Jimmy still has a gun on him. That knife probably existed to create a gloomy and cold effect.

In "Goodfellas," there are two great scenes. The first is that Tommy is dressed up and ready to go to the gang's promotion ceremony (in fact, they are going to kill him), he is happy like a child, kisses and hugs his mother, and his mother gives him some instructions. The scene was very bleak. In the other, after Henry's wife went to Jimmy for help, Jimmy told her to walk along the alley not far from the front, and after entering a door, there would be valuable clothes for her. It was a breathless moment, she wondered if someone who used to be like a family member could still be trusted, and the camera rolled over her hesitant face. That kind of atmosphere made people feel that she was getting closer to death. A false alarm followed. But it was enough to make her believe what Henry said, they would be finished at any moment.

After reading it, there are two feelings: 1. Being a mafia is very beautiful, you can do whatever you want, but you have to pay it back. 2. In a gang, when life and death interests are involved, everyone is protecting themselves, and no matter how good the relationship is, it will fall apart.

Goodfellas quotes

  • Paul Cicero: I don't want any more of that shit.

Henry Hill: What shit? What are you talking about?

Paul Cicero: Just stay away from the garbage, you know what I mean.

    Henry Hill: Look, Paulie...

Paul Cicero: I'm not talking about what you did inside, you did what you had to do, I'm talking about now, from now, here and now.

Henry Hill: Paulie, why would I want to get into that...

Paul Cicero: Don't make a jerk out of me, just don't do it... just don't do it. Now I want to talk to you about Jimmy, you have to watch out for him. He's a good earner but he's wild, takes too many chances.

Henry Hill: Yeah, I know that, I know Jimmy, you think I would take chances like Jimmy?

Paul Cicero: And Tommy, he's a good kid too. But he's crazy, he's a cowboy, he's got too much to prove. You gotta watch out for kids like this.

Henry Hill: Yeah, I know what they are, I only use them for certain things, believe me, you don't have to worry.

Paul Cicero: Listen, I ain't gonna get fucked like Gribbs, understand? Gribbs is 70 years old, and the fuckin' guy's gonna die in prison. I don't need that. So I'm warning everybody, EVERYBODY. It could be my son, it could be anybody. Gribbs got 20 years just for saying "hello" to some fuck who was sneaking behind his back selling junk. I don't need that. Ain't gonna happen to me, you understand?

    Henry Hill: Uh huh.

Paul Cicero: You know that you're only out early because I got you a job. I don't need this heat, understand that.

    Henry Hill: Uh huh.

Paul Cicero: And you see anybody fucking around with this shit, you're going to tell me, right?

    Henry Hill: Yeah.

Paul Cicero: [slaps him] That means anybody!

    Henry Hill: All right.

    Paul Cicero: Yeah?

    Henry Hill: Yeah, of course.

  • Jimmy Conway: I'm not mad, I'm proud of you. You took your first pinch like a man and you learn two great things in your life. Look at me, never rat on your friends and always keep your mouth shut.
