"Dorian Gray" has found a perfect balance between art and business, horror and art. The film is neither vulgar nor obscure
. "
"Dorian Gray" is not completely adapted from the original work, but a lot of new content has been added. The most obvious difference may be the many flashbacks inserted in the film. They showed the audience the terrible childhood that Dorian Gray experienced and enhanced the visibility of the story. The film focuses on depicting the hedonistic and degenerate lives of the characters in the film. The familiar Gothic style, psychedelic sex scenes, twisted violent plots and a large amount of plasma flood the audience's vision, making the film more like a supernatural Fantasy films are more reminiscent of vampire movies than Wilde’s black satire of Victorian society. "Dorian Gray" with a luxurious lineup may become a well-produced commercial film, but it has virtually discarded Wilde's exploration of eternal youth and beauty, and lost the most keen wisdom and insight in the original work
.
At the end of the film, in order to prevent Emily from seeing her ugly soul, Dowling chose to die by suicide. The director explored a series of moral issues by enriching the original work in the film, such as whether Dowling's tragedy originated from outside temptations or his own inner desires. By mixing these issues into the movie, the director advocates that people return to their beautiful spiritual home, respect the laws of life, and maintain their faith in God. The final ending of the film warns people: The wicked must be rewarded: Even if the wicked Daolin wakes up and longs for repentance, he still cannot be forgiven. In the end, he can only die in the fire of hell. Although Henry who instigated Dowling was alive, he could no longer have the affection he longed for. The biggest shortcoming of the film is that the film overemphasizes practicality, but does not have enough space to reflect Wilde's exploration and pursuit of beauty in the original work. Moreover, compared with the rhyme, catchy, and intelligent sentences in the original work, the lines in the film appear to be too colloquial and flat, which makes the film lose a large part of the literary and artistic appreciation of the original work.
