This is a film about self-fulfillment through emotional investment. "Song to Song" finds a correct entry point. How the audience chooses and acts in love tells us who we are. In fact, the movie has a lot of time to clarify some things, but the director Malick chose to spend more time on the picture, creating a picture with saturated colors and beautiful oil paintings. "The technique is actually challenging the audience's patience.
The theme of the film is actually very easy to understand. This is a story about people who blindly pursue the life they want, but sacrifice themselves and their freedom instead. The beautiful but fragmented images in the film, the various plots that disrupt the timeline back and forth, the slow pace, the monologues of the characters muttering to themselves, are basically equivalent to a lullaby if the actors are no longer attractive.
