accept the past and move on

When I watch Renee Zellweger's films, I can always find a little bit of "BJ's Diary of a Single", which is not a good thing for an actor. Of course, maybe it's just my own problem.

What is the story of "My One and Only"? It tells the story of a mother who escaped from her own life with her two children. The mother found out that her husband was having an extramarital affair and left in a fit of rage, taking her two sons with her. This woman is very elegant, but also very stubborn and strong. Her ideas are traditional and conservative, sticking to her principles. This is perhaps the most charismatic aspect of this character.

However, this does not mean that she is a good mother. In the absence of financial foundation, she still spent a lot of money to buy a Cadillac, which can be matched with her noble soul, and those money may be able to live on them for a long time. Later, she insisted on finding a good husband, and was constantly cheated by men, but she still fantasized that she could find a man with economic foundation to support their mother and son.

The facts were brutal at the time. In the process, son George, saw disappointment.

When George and his mother quarreled for the first time, George asked several questions about himself in a row, such as how big his feet were and which book he said most often, but his mother didn't even know. Her mother is the kind of person who lives in her own world. She strictly protects her world, and of course, there are her children in this world. But she can also leave when she finds that the child is out of her world's control. For example, George said that he never thought that his mother really left him at a relative's house. George's statement that her mother was a bad mother may have hurt her own inner world's positioning of herself.

Of course, the key to this movie is not Mom, but George. Because his life was unfortunate. On the one hand, I ran into a father who was not very responsible, and on the other hand, I ran into a very obscene mother. So when he first started, he rejected his current life very much. He hoped that he would go to his past home and return to the time when his parents had not separated.

Later, when his father died, George suddenly realized that people must keep moving forward and not be afraid of their past. Don't let the past be something that prevents you from living a good life. So he told his classmates about his experience at school, but the classmates didn't understand at all. Because this escape is his life, his experience, not a simple trip. During this escape, he grew up.

The last few lines are actually a monologue from the heart.

In the end, he changed back to his father's real name, accepted that he had an unsatisfactory life, and then worked hard for a better place.

This is how life is, unsatisfactory, unsatisfactory, unsatisfactory, at least for most people. But we can't stop moving forward, and we can't stay in a mistake and waste our life. Sometimes, if we decide that it is a mistake, we must bravely leave. If you decide that is the right path, go for it.

Life is quickly wasted, and it is hard to say whether our choices are right or wrong. But escape is not a good choice.

My One and Only quotes

  • Bill Massey: As a man, there's only one thing you need to know about a woman.

    George Devereaux: What's that?

Bill Massey: They're never the right temperature.

    George Devereaux: No?

Bill Massey: Something to do with their plumbing. Reproduction. Whatever reason, most of the time... they're either too hot or too cold. Mostly too cold. So what you have to do... is carry a sweater or a jacket or something with you at all times. Something you can keep in the trunk of your car... or in your closet at work... for when their thermostat gets messed up.

    George Devereaux: What else?

Bill Massey: That's it. Once you've got that covered... there's nothing else you need to know about a woman.

  • Paula: Have you ever seen breasts?

    George Devereaux: Sure... one.

    Paula: You saw one breast?

George Devereaux: No, I meant once. I saw some once.

    Paula: Some?

George Devereaux: Two. I saw two, once...

    Paula: You wanna see mine?

    George Devereaux: Who? Me? Now?

    Paula: Ready?

    George Devereaux: Okay. Sure, yeah.

    Paula: How do they look?

George Devereaux: Alright! Good, fine. Of course I don't have much to compare them to...
