The film's writer and director, Ira Sachs, has a particular interest in the films of the 1940s and 1950s, and wanted to make a film that focused on the intricacies of marriage or private life in a candid way . In order to find such a story, Sachs looked up many popular novels until he came across John Bingham's mystery novel "Five Forks to Heaven". After reading the novel, he realized that he had found a very suitable subject. When Sacks and fellow screenwriter Oren Mwoman started writing the script, they felt the story had better be cynical, and they wanted to send the audience a hint of cynicism from the very first scene.
