In 1945, the dark clouds of war finally passed. In Boone in the central United States, three fellow soldiers returned to their hometown on the same plane after being demobilized. These three people are Sergeant Al, former bank clerk , Captain Fred, former department store clerk , and Sailor Homer. After returning home, Al was greeted with enthusiasm by his wife Millie, grown-up daughter and son. But the growth of the children and the generation gap between thoughts made Al suddenly feel at a loss. When Fred returned home, he saw that his father was alcoholic and his mother had fallen, and his wife, who had been married before the expedition, had moved out of his home and was nowhere to find it. Homer, who lost his hands on the battlefield, had a prosthetic hand, but when faced with his relatives, especially his childhood sweetheart fiancee, he had a great psychological burden. He worried that his fiancée chose to stay behind because of pity.
On the same night, the three met in a bar and talked about their own experiences. At the same time, Fred and Al's daughter Peggyfirst sight. Al returned to work in the bank, but he disagrees with the bank's senior management because of loan guarantees to veterans. Fred returned to the cold drink shop as a salesperson, but this was inconsistent with his heart; at the same time, he found that he could not bear his wife's pleasure-seeking, vanity and snobbery. Homer is still indifferent and evasive towards his fiancee. After a painful decision, the three men finally started a new life. At Homer's wedding, the three families met again, and Fred and Peggy finally came together. The three demobilized veterans have all rediscovered themselves in their new lives, and a new period of The Best Years of Our Lives has opened.  .

[RKO (2)] The golden period after the war is to face it bravely, and the strength in the second half of the film is slightly inferior.

For these three veterans, what the war left behind was not just military exploits or physical disabilities, but mental traumas that were difficult to quell and a temporary inability to adapt to daily life. A very down-to-earth critique of reality with a breath of life, which makes people sigh and hopeful in the end. I still don't like the girl Teresa Wright.

The Best Years of Our Lives quotes

  • [Mr. Thorpe has offered Derry a job as asst. floor manager and part-time soda jerk]

    Fred Derry: At what salary?

Mr. Thorpe: Thirty-two fifty per week.

Fred Derry: Thirty-two fifty. I used to make over four hundred dollars a month in the Air Force.

Mr. Thorpe: The war is over, Derry.

  • [Al is explaining to the bank president why he made the loan to Mr. Novak]

Al Stephenson: You see, Mr. Milton, in the Army I've had to be with men when they were stripped of everything in the way of property except what they carried around with them and inside them. I saw them being tested. Now some of them stood up to it and some didn't. But you got so you could tell which ones you could count on. I tell you this man Novak is okay. His 'collateral' is in his hands, in his heart and his guts. It's in his right as a citizen.
