On April 8, 1940, Nazi Germany raided Norway, which was pursuing a neutral policy. The Norwegian royal family, government, soldiers and ordinary people faced difficult choices about their national and personal destinies. As the first king of Norway after political independence, Haakon VII's attitude towards war is of vital importance. On April 9, Haakon VII angrily refused when the Germans demanded surrender in exchange for peace. That night, the German airstrike killed 34 people, and the king made up his mind to formally declare war on Germany. In June of the same year, King Haakon and the government of Nicholas Wall went into exile in the United Kingdom, and continued domestic resistance during their exile.
