In the winter of 1950, the Qing dynasty abolished Emperor Puyiand was taken back to China from the Soviet Union as a war criminal. After the train arrived at the Manzhouli Railway Station on the Sino-Soviet border, Puyi thought that his life would be unsafe, so he slipped into the bathroom and attempted to commit suicide by cutting his wrists. The director of the China War Criminals Management Officefound that the situation was different, and hurriedly knocked on the bathroom door. The knock on the door made Pu Yi fall into memory.
On a winter night in 1908, the captain of the Qing palace guard knocked on the door of the Prince's Mansion, and took the 3-year-old Puyi into the palace for training according to the will of the Empress Dowager Cixi, preparing to take over. In the cigarette-filled Kunning Palace, Cixi, who was about to die, met with Pu Yi and told him to ascend the throne today. When the grand ceremony of ascending to the throne was held in the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Pu Yi found a small cage with grasshoppers on the minister Chen Baochen. His interest in grasshoppers obviously surpassed the thousands of civil and military ministers kneeling at his feet. After ascending to the throne, Puyi became the most lacking discipline and the loneliest child in the world.
Pu Yi woke up from the memory. He was also rescued by the chief of management, and from then on he began a prisoner life under trial and reform.

The film is too westernized, but the fate of Puyi has been used to carry the changes in China for nearly half a century, and then explain the ancient Greek tragedy theme of the confrontation between man and fate. If a person’s life is a process of constant loss, Puyi is undoubtedly the one who has lost the most, because he once owned the entire China...

You can't keep up with all the departures, and you can't open all the doors. All people are liars.

The Last Emperor quotes

  • Reginald Fleming 'R.J.' Johnston: It would be conveniently sad if he becomes blind. To the expense, Your Excellency. To the cost of maintaining one thousand two hundred eunuchs, three hundred and fifty ladies-in-waiting and one hundred and eighty-five cooks to buying a hundred and twenty sable furs a month and three thousand chickens a week. To the fact that eight hundred and forty guards and employees of the household department, plus one Lord Chamberlain, care only about one thing! Filling their own rice bowls!

  • Wan Jung: Is the Emperor against arranged marriages?

Pu Yi, at 15: It is humiliating not to choose whom you marry!

Wan Jung: Even I was not allowed to choose. And yet westerners might be amazed how much happiness can come from arranged marriages.
