The Great Dictator is a film directed by Charlie Chaplin and starring Pauline Gaudí, which premiered in 1940. This is Charlie Chaplin's first sound film. The film uses the background of World War II to portray a great dictator who brutally persecuted Jews and attempted to rule the world. Chaplin obviously imitated Hitler, the fascist leader, in character modeling, and performed a biting satire on this character through performances. In 1997, the film was listed as a "Culturally, Historically, and Artistically Significant Film" by the National Film Registry of the U.S. Library of Congress.

I watched it when I was a child and thought it was very good. After checking it, it turned out that it was Chaplin's first sound film!

Chaplin said: Comedy uses long-term view, tragedy uses close-up view. And Chaplin's body language is far more than facial expressions. In the end, the tone was ridiculously absurd and ended with a serious, grand speech. Unexpected.

As far as a movie is concerned, I don't think it's good, and I'm not very happy to watch it. But the movie was born during World War II and it seemed like it was good enough.

The Great Dictator quotes

  • Napaloni - Dictator of Bacteria: Ah, this is a lovely place! I been-a fine. I just had-a nice-a cold shower. And that bath tub - as soon as you get the plumbing fixed, it'll be in-a good-a shape.

  • Schultz: There it is! The village of Pretzelberg.

    A Jewish Barber: Pretzelberg?

Schultz: If we can pass through there, we're safe across the Osterlich border.
